Using her immense powers of delegation, the Lady-Captain Aurora Black set her intrepid crew the task of claiming the factory-complex of Cog.
Taking half of her most elite troops back to the Guncutter along with a medic and the Magos in order to tend to the wounds of Talon, the Lady-Captain Aurora Black charged Elorn, Rexx and Oleg with heading further into the facility, making contact with any Mechanicus personnel, and informing them that she is the new owner of Cog.
To make sure that they did not get into too much trouble, the Lady-Captain assigned two of her elite troops to closely watch Elorn and Oleg.
Taking about a platoon of armsmen, augmented by two of Oleg’s Skitarii bodyguard, Hydrath and Feldt, the Explorers used Elorn’s multi-key and tech skills to begin accessing the deeper tunnels of the facility, away from the deadly corrosive air. They proceeded down large tunnels, large enough to drive a small vehicle, which appeared to contain electrical cabling and pipes conveying hydraulic fluid, water and other things around the facility. Their path was gently spiralling inwards and upwards. Occasionally they encountered ventilation grates (though what benefit this gave either the tunnels of the rooms below was unclear) through which they could observe several of the factory floors above which they travelled.
Taking a moment to commune with the warp, Oleg looked out over the factory. He could detect links, almost like warp strings, from almost everyone on the factory floor. Thicker strings, almost ropes, were connecting the vigilant overseers that were ensuring that the work of the manufactorium continued.
Moving on, the group found their way into an area that they identified as in the vicinity of the control core. The rooms around the exit they took seemed to be a mixture of machine shrines and sparse bedrooms. After a brief search, they were able to determine the direction towards the Control Core.
Reaching a large chamber, they saw a great stairway leading up towards huge double doors, a huge symbol of the machine cult across the doorway. On either side of the doors, two twin-linked heavy bolter turrets began tracking their movement. The explorers quickly retreated back out of sight, discussing frantically various options to bypass or disable these defences. Throwing an armsman’s helmet out, they watched as one of the guns tracked the movement only to reset its sights on the corner they were standing behind.
Eventually, Oleg asked Feldt to “talk some of that machiney language”. Stepping out into the centre of the entrance chamber, both guns trained on the Skitarii’s form, a series of arcane machine-talk whistles emanated from Feldt. Moments later, a booming electronic voice spoke out into the chamber.
“Greetings. I am Magos Tevla. Why do you approach my domain?”
After some vacillation, Elorn stepped forward and announced that they were Emissaries from the Black Hand and the Harbinger of Glory, servants of Aurora Black. That they come seeking a missing person, but have found the factory in the hands of traitors.
“How can you prove to me that you have not fallen to the Whisperer? You warp-tainted creatures have tried trickery before. You will starve long before we give in. Then I will regain my factory. Praise the Omnissiah.”
At this, Oleg Vollus stepped forward. He explained that if there is doubt, Magos Tevla should use the auspex arrays of Cog to look at the near space, to witness that a titanic struggle had recently occurred, leaving two system ships aflame and a strange alien ship destroyed, and that the noble crews of the Harbinger of Glory and the Black Hand have prevailed to come provide succour for Cog.
After a moment, the voice of Tevla boomed out once again.
“I will trust you if there is a chance that I can make the Cog turn once again.”
Making there way into the Control Core, they found about 30 tech-priests of various ranks, and various levels of augmentation. They were all similar, however, in the fact that they were universally somewhat gaunt and filthy. The Explorers quickly determined that the surviving Mechanicus had held out under siege for at many months, if not a full year, their ability to subsist off of minimal nutrients able to keep them alive. Magos Tevla dominated the large space, his legs replaced with a crane armature suspended from the centre of the ceiling, allowing him access to every control panel in the room.
Magos Tevla and an assistant, Lexographer Glenn, gave the Explorers an appraisal of the situation, explaining what the Whispered Ones controlled, what the Magos still controlled, and an explanation of the automated defences and riot supression measures distributed around the facility.
Working together, Elorn, Rexx and the Navigator Oleg appraised the situation and devised a strategy with which to drive out the mysteriously controlled traitors. Using the powerful vox equipment in the control core, they contacted the Lady-Captain, informing her that a safe and clear route existed to the Control Core. About half an hour later, the Lady-Captain was brought to the chamber, her command throne converted into a sedan chair carried by her bodyguards. While the MAgos Bertha went to speak to the Magos Tevla about the wonders of the facility they were in, the Lady-Captain gave Elorn, Rexx and Oleg full authorisation to take necessary measures to cleanse the facility.
After thorough planning, they co-ordinated an all-out-assault which would begin once they captured and cleared a docking bay. Personally leading the fight, Elorn, Rexx and Oleg stormed a bay, signalling the shuttles from the Black Hand to convey troops brought from the Harbinger of Glory. Deploying about 2,000 armsmen, including many of the Ghost-Warders of the Harbinger of Glory, the crew used the facility’s defences and the moon’s corrosive atmosphere in order to cleanse most of the facility’s 4,000 living serf-labourers. Only about 200 of the armsmen deployed were killed, though some reports started to filter back of losses that occurred when soldiers turned on their companions…
As control of Cog was restored, Magos Tevla sent his servants to assess what the Whispered Ones had been up to, and what steps would be needed to restore Cog to full functionality. One thing that was quickly determined is that in addition to continuing some standard manufacture the factory had been producing large quantities of cold-weather gear, heavy weaponry and cold-terrain vehicles. Almost 6 months worth of production had already been taken off-moon, to destinations unknown.
Now the explorers must decide to what use they will put the newly won facility and what leads to follow next in the mission set to them by Captain Keel.
