On approach to Cog, the Black Fleet is approached by three slow system ships. Two ships of an unknown configuration slip swiftly through the storm.
The lead system ship communicates, to say that they will have to approach and meet before allowing access to Cog.
The Lady-Captain agrees, but as the ships approach the tension mounts. Attempts are made to scan the system ships (the unknown ships being out of range) and a fluctuation in the lead ship’s engine is detected. The Magos quickly deduces that the crew are attempting to overload their plasma reactors and detonate the ship once in range of the Harbinger of Glory and the Black Hand.
Taking swift action, the Lady Captain orders her command crew to split between the Black Hand and the Harbinger of Glory, and to open fire on the lead system ship.
A heavy salvo streaks through the void, striking the system ship and crippling its engines. No longer at risk of catastrophic explosion, HoG and BH turn their attention to other ships.
What follows is a sequence of deft manoeuvres as the two vessels attempt to open fire on the different foes that face them. Too quickly they catch a glimpse of the unknown ships assailing them – huge chunks of crystal, held together with an unknown force and crackling with a dark energy. The scanners are able to discern their warp-tainted weaponry and the gravity sails that aid their propulsion but can identify nothing else.
Despite the speed of these ships, the HoG and the BH are able to gain the upper hand. A lucky strike from one the the foes hits the Black Hand, setting fire to the systems that make up the Lance Cannon. The crew panics as fire, the voidsman’s terror, sweeps through the highly energised lance component. The Fusemen battle valiantly, as the command crew debate about who is willing to go and lead the fire fighting effort. Even while this goes on, the Harbinger of Glory and the Black Hand finally sweep the field, with two of the system ships crippled and burning in the void, one limping away from the battle field, a cystalline vessel gone cold and breaking up, and the other fled deep into the storm.
Cog is now open to their approach.
