Port Wander, city in the stars, last bastion of Imperial authority on the edge of the Calixis sector.
The Harbinger of Glory, a Sword class frigate, home to many thousands of superstitious crew, has made its way through realspace and the warp to this place over the last month.
Captained by Aurora Black, scion of the Black dynasty, who took control of the vessel and the legal rights of a Rogue Trader just over a month ago. The ship had sat at anchor over bustling Malfi for almost 50 years, unused since the last Black who had taken the mantle of Rogue Trader had captained her.
The Black dynasty have recently emerged from a “trade war” with the Dupeire family and are now stronger than ever. Aurora acquitted herself well in the conflict, whether she was leading kill-teams and attending social functions to win support. She also lost many of her close friends to assassins and traitors, leaving her paranoid and mistrustful. Her parents could see that, were she to remain on Malfi, a future of attending grand balls and engaging in petty feuding with minor Lordlings would surely drive their daughter mad. She needed something with which she could feel accomplished, and so they unlocked the family stasis vault and bestowed upon Aurora the Warrant of Trade, granted to the Black family at the time of the Thorian Restoration, almost 4,000 years ago.
However, embarking on such an endeavour is not as simple as being handed a scrap of paper and taking control of a rusted ship. Taking favours from the Adeptus Mechanicus, the Harbinger of Glory was brought to full capability (despite strange anomalies reported by the AdMech crews). Drawing upon contacts within the Ecclesiarchy, Aurora was able to bring the crew up to full strength and obtain a substantial operational fund to ensure that the crew was supplied for the first several months.
These favours were not without costs, with each organisation insisting on an observer to make sure that their investment was not wasted. The Magos, Bertha, boarded at Malfi, reacting with less disgust at the alien technology embedded within the vessel than most of her coreligionists. Several weeks of journey and a brief stop at the frontier world of Faldon Kise and Sigmund Severius joined the crew, quickly being acclaimed as Ship’s Confessor.
The last stop to make before plunging into the danger of the Koronus Expanse would be Port Wander, an Imperial space station positioned on the very edge of civilisation.
