An attempt to mutiny-escape is made by some of the Dig-Guards, hoping to steal the Guncutter. Even as they are shot down by the loyal guards, the Rak’Gol appear, having crept to the maze-entrance. While those at the barricade attempt to fend of this incursion, bringing down the Rak’Gol before they can kill anyone but the mutineers, a hideous shriek is heard.
One of the xeno-archeologists has been taken by some kind of Monster. The Explorers plunge into the maze in pursuit, discovering a creepy stalker in the form of Badb Ra, an Eldar Corsair. Unwilling to reveal her mission, she does state that their goals align. The Lady-Captain finds her alien arrogance foul, and immediately distrusts her.
The Navigator Oleg Optimo Vollus arrives aboard a flight of Arvus Landers, bringing reinforcements that crush the Rak’Gol at the digsite with minimal casualties.
The explorers are finding their way around the maze confusing and frightening, the Magos even breaking down in fear at one point, murmering “I’m sorry, I’m sorry” as she strokes her servo-skull. Oleg however, is able to open his warp eye and see a foul trail through the maze – the monster? He is able to rendevue with the Explorers and, with the help of the somewhat-recovered Magos, is able to navigate to the centre of the Maze.
They confront the Monster in the Maze. A beast from a nightmare, stooped and ready to charge. The thing is over three metres tall, its black limbs twisted masses of knotted muscles, and covered with layers of chitin and horn. Worst of all is its face, which is obviously that of a man. Its eyes are wide and beseeching, as if the soul within is consumed with misery at the knowledge of its own continued existence. The monster utters a soul-wrenching roar of pain and suffering.
Despite its regeneration and its warp-enchanted claws, the only casualties are a pair of digsite guards. the monster seemingly recognises Overseer Leerus, and focused its rage upon him for a moment, but only managed to tear open his leg. Elorn opens up with her ancient Inferno Pistol, burning a huge hole in the crying monster and exposing a mysterious crystal artefact. As the monster charges Elorn to extract a measure of vengeance, its torso slowly regrowing flesh over its exposed warped skeleton. Fortunately, gunfire from the others shatters the crystal and kills the beast, its corpse dissolving into ash and bone. While the beast had been attacking, Badb Ra had leapt past it, towards a plinth at the centre of the room. The LAdy-Captain, having never trusted the xeno, immediately disregarded the Monster and pursued Badb Ra. After a small scuffle, the eldar realised she was outmatched and surrendered, sharing her real purpose. To rescue an artefact the Rak’Gol were trying to find, and to close the maze forever, using the Egarian crystal key she had on a chain around her neck. The Lady-Captain ordered the Magos to wire Badb Ra with a 20 minute fuse grenade-bomb, and agreed to leave Badb Ra to close the Maze and join them outside. The Explorers manage to escape to the shattered digsite, losing a few workers in the process. Badb Ra does not return to be defused.
